1

Stretching

Perform the following stretch at least three times a day:

Stand with your toes on a step and your heels off the edge.

Slowly lower your heels down and hold for 10 seconds before lifting your heels to the starting position.

Repeat 5 to 10 times. Don't force your heel farther than it wants to go. If the movement is too much for both feet at once, do one foot at a time.

2

Wear the right size shoe

Help your lower back, knees and ankles by wearing the right size shoe. How do you know the shoes you’re wearing are the right size? Make sure you measure your feet every 2 years.

There should be about half an inch of wiggle room between your longest toe and the shoe.

When you find the right shoe two pairs are a must, so they can be rotated between shifts. Because nurse’s shoes get so much wear and tear, they’ll need replacing every 3-6 months.

3

Put your feet up and soak them

Elevate your feet for 15-20 minutes.

Soak your feet in warm water with epsom salts, or a warm, wet towel, and wrap it around your feet and legs.

4

Hydrate and get the right nutrients

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids.  Being dehydrated can cause your feet to cramp in addition to the pain associated with long hours of standing. Cramping can also be caused by a lack of potassium, so eat foods like bananas or spinach.

5

Wear compression socks

Earlier we mentioned the importance of wearing the right shoes. This seems obvious but what’s often overlooked and just as important is using the right socks. Leg fatigue, aka that "heavy legs feeling," can be alleviated by compression socks which help move the blood from your feet to your legs, and back to your heart.

Do long shifts lead to painful, achy, and swollen feet? Brian Park, RN was an ICU nurse in Washington that was way too familiar with that feeling and was determined to find a solution.

Then one night during a long shift he thought of creating Nabee Socks, the world’s best compression sock with stylish designs.

Nabee socks are engineered for nurses by nurses. Not only do they help ease pain after long shifts, they’re soft and long lasting as well.
